* 100년 전 1926년, 함경북도 청진에서 태어난 신상옥은 어린 시절부터 극장을 드나들며 나운규와 이규환, 찰리 채플린의 영화들을 두루 보며 자라난다.¹ 수동식 영사기를 구해 버려진 필름을 직접 돌려 보던 소년은 미술에 열중하던 도쿄 유학 시기를 지나, 귀국 후 생계를 위해 영화 포스터를 그리면서 다시 영화의 길로 들어선다. 또 다른 1926년, 경기도 광주에서 태어난 최은희는 <나그네>(1937)의 문예봉을 보고난 후 배우의 꿈을 꾸게 된다. 공교롭게도 소년 신상옥이 즐겨 보던 이규환 감독의 영화였다. 조선연극사와 백화가극단(白花歌劇團)을 거친 최은희는 해방 이후 토월회(土月會)에서 연기의 기본기를 다진다.² 두 사람의 길이 겹쳐진 것은 한국 전쟁 중이었다. 나날이 인기를 얻어가던 최은희의 연극을 보…
